Yes - retinal detachment is an ophthalmic emergency. If you see a sudden 'curtain' or shadow blocking your vision, accompanied by a large number of new floaters and flashes of light, seek immediate specialist evaluation. Retinal detachments are treatable if caught early, but can cause permanent vision loss if delayed.

Warning signs include: sudden onset of floaters (dark spots or threads in vision), flashes of light (especially in peripheral vision), a shadow or curtain blocking part of your visual field, distorted or wavy central vision, or sudden blurred vision. Any of these warrants same-day evaluation.

Intravitreal injections deliver anti-VEGF drugs (e.g., Lucentis, Avastin, Eylea) or steroids directly into the vitreous cavity to treat conditions like AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. The eye is numbed beforehand - most patients feel only mild pressure. The injection takes seconds.

Treatment depends on the stage. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) is monitored with regular OCT and photography. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO) are treated with laser photocoagulation, intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, and in advanced cases, vitreoretinal surgery.

Most floaters are benign and due to vitreous syneresis (natural ageing of the vitreous gel). However, a sudden large increase in floaters - especially with flashes or vision loss - must be evaluated urgently to rule out retinal tear or detachment.
