Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually due to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). It progresses silently and painlessly in most cases - by the time patients notice vision loss, significant damage has already occurred. Early detection through regular IOP checks and optic nerve imaging is the only way to preserve vision.

Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be effectively controlled. Vision already lost to glaucoma is permanent. However, with correct treatment - eye drops, laser therapy (SLT) or surgery - further vision loss can be stopped or significantly slowed. Early diagnosis is critical.

Key risk factors include: elevated intraocular pressure, age (60+), family history of glaucoma, myopia (short-sightedness), diabetes, hypertension, prolonged steroid use, and previous eye injury. High-risk individuals should have annual IOP checks even without symptoms.

For most patients, yes. Glaucoma is a chronic condition requiring ongoing management. Eye drops need to be used daily and consistently. Laser or surgical treatments can reduce medication burden. Regular monitoring (every 3 - 6 months) is essential even when pressure is well controlled.
