Have you ever noticed tiny black dots, thread-like lines, ants, or spider-shaped shadows drifting across your vision? These are commonly known as eye floaters.
While floaters are often harmless, certain changes can signal a serious eye condition that needs immediate attention.
In this video, Dr. Surabhi Dutt explains when floaters are normal—and when they are a warning sign.
Understanding Eye Floaters
1. What Are Floaters?
Floaters appear as moving spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes that shift when you move your eyes. They are shadows cast by tiny changes in the eye’s internal gel (vitreous).
2. Age & Common Occurrence
Floaters can appear at any age and are often a normal part of aging or vision changes. Most people experience them at some point in life.
3. The “Shower of Floaters” Warning
A sudden increase in floaters or seeing them like a “shower” is a major red flag. This may indicate retinal stress or tearing and requires urgent eye evaluation.
4. Floater vs. Fixed Spot
A floater moves with your eye.
A fixed dark spot that does not move is not a floater and needs immediate medical attention.
5. Link to Retinal Health
Floaters caused by vitreous weakness (“water weakness”) can sometimes lead to retinal weakness or retinal detachment (parda) if ignored.
6. Why Dilated Eye Exams Matter
Only a dilated retinal examination can safely rule out tears, holes, or detachment in the retina.
Floaters at a Glance
| Symptom | Likely Meaning | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional moving floaters | Usually harmless | Routine eye check |
| Sudden increase in floaters | Possible retinal issue | Urgent eye exam |
| Light flashes with floaters | Retinal stress | Emergency visit |
| Fixed dark spot | Serious condition | Immediate consultation |
When Should You Worry?
Seek urgent eye care if floaters are:
- Sudden or rapidly increasing
- Accompanied by flashes of light
- Associated with blurred or missing vision
- Fixed and not moving with the eye
